Australia’s economic development has been facing the problems of skills shortages and labor shortages. In response to these problems, the government has launched a series of employer sponsored visas to attract overseas people with certain skills to work in Australia. At present, the most common types of employer-guaranteed visas are 482 temporary skills shortage visas, 186 employer-guaranteed permanent residence visas and 494 employer-guaranteed temporary visas in remote areas.

Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482)

The 482 Temporary Skilled Shortage Visa is a temporary work visa established by the Australian government for Australian companies to hire various professionals or skilled workers from overseas. It aims to fill the short to medium-term shortage of skilled workers in a fast and flexible way. Meet the needs of the labour market. The employer nominates the applicant and guarantees the applicant to work for it.

The 482 visa is comprised of a Short-Term stream, Medium-Term stream and Labour agreement stream:

  • Short-Term stream:
    Occupation needs to be on the STSOL short-term occupation list for skilled immigrants in Australia, and a visa valid for 2-4 years can be obtained after approval.
  • Medium-Term stream:
    Occupation needs to be on the mid-to-long-term MLTSSL occupation list, and a visa valid for 4 years can be obtained after approval.
  • Labour agreement stream:
    ustralian companies introduce skilled workers from overseas through a labour agreement with the Australian Department of Immigration, subject to the specific labour agreement.

Scope of application for 482 visa:

  • Applicable scope of occupational positions:
    The 482 visa is applicable to a wide range of people. International students, technical personnel, white-collar workers and business people can apply; the types of occupations that can be applied for are diverse, such as chefs, auto mechanics, construction workers, electric welders, fitters, IT, engineer, preschool education, electrician, carpentry, accountant, social worker, nurse, architect, project management and other positions.
  • Geographical scope of application:
    The 482 visa has no geographic restrictions on the employer and the place of work of the nominated position, and it is applicable to all parts of Australia.

Employer Sponsored Permanent Residence visa (subclass 186)

The 186 visa is an employer-guaranteed skilled migration program established by the Australian government to attract overseas high-tech talents. Applicants can submit visa applications within or outside Australia, provided they meet the conditions. Unlike immigration through a business investment visa, applicants applying for this category of visas do not need to pass the complicated scoring standards. After obtaining the employer's guarantee and meeting the corresponding application conditions, they can obtain an Australian permanent residence visa in one step.

Basic application requirements:

  1. Obtain the nomination of an accredited employer in Australia;
  2. The age is less than 45 years old;
  3. Pass a career assessment;
  4. IELTS has a minimum of 6 points for each item;
  5. More than three years of relevant work experience;
  6. Occupation is on the MLTSSL list of 186 employer sponsored occupations in Australia

Visa category:

  1. Temporary to permanent residency category: Applicable to applicants who hold a 482 visa, have worked for the current employer in the nominated position for more than 3 years, and whose employer intends to provide them with a permanent position.
  2. Direct application for permanent residency category: Applicable to applicants who have more than 3 years of full-time relevant work experience and have never or briefly worked in Australia.
  3. Type of labor contract: Applicable to applicants who have obtained employer guarantee through labor agreement or regional immigration agreement.

Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494)

Subclass 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored (Regional) was officially launched on November 16, 2019, replacing the original 187 remote area employer sponsored permanent residence visa. This visa is a temporary visa valid for 5 years, designed to help employers in remote areas find suitable overseas employees to solve the problem of labour shortage in remote areas.

The 494 visa is a temporary visa, valid for 5 years, within 5 years, 494 visa holders who meet 3 years of residence and work requirements and minimum annual income requirements (pre-tax income not less than $53,900/year) can apply for a 191 permanent residence visa. Applicable to applicants who have insufficient scores for skilled immigrants and are willing to sponsor immigration through employers in remote areas of Australia.

Working area scope of application:

Applicants need to work and live in Australia's "new remote areas", that is, areas other than Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
